WVHI to cancel this year’s convention on June 15-17
The 14-member board of directors of the West Virginia Housing Institute Inc. has voted reluctantly to cancel this year’s convention, scheduled for June 15-17 at the Stonewall Jackson Resort in Roanoke, W.Va.
To mitigate the disappointment somewhat, the board has scheduled two separate video conferences for next week and the following week to help explain to businesses some of the economic benefits that are being offered by the federal government for beleaguered businesses.
The board, which voted unanimously yesterday by teleconference, took the action for several reasons. This announcement is to provide attendees with the longest period of notification possible.
The ongoing uncertainty about the coronavirus epidemic and its longterm consequences were the basis for the decision after Co-President George Gunnell called the board into extraordinary session. The board debated delaying the three-day session until August, but feared that convening then might interfere with the opportunity of children to attend, which is a cherished element of the convention for the board members.
Gov. Justice’s stay-at-home orders were a defining parameter in the decision, combined with the sheer uncertainty about how long the self-imposed isolation resulting from this crisis would last. Board member Terry Hughes also added a critical element that even if business was restored sometime this summer those companies would be actively engaged in revitalizing their operations and likely would not be able to attend or send attendees to the conference. The board was told that at least one other state-level industry convention in the South also has been canceled.
So, it is with great regret, but with concern for your health, that the board made this decision.
We plan to be back in operation in 2021.
Information about the two hourlong seminars, which will be presented by WVHI Associate General Counsel and board member Johnnie Brown will be forthcoming. The seminars on two separate subjects will be offered free-of-charge to members at 2 p.m. on April 16 and 1 p.m. on April 21.
